After doing some decluttering, I realize that it is so easy to accumulate more stuff!--Parkinson's Law is obviously at work. While we have so many on-demand options, things have also become cheaper.

I've figured that I would create some rules for myself in order to make reduce the amount of "stuff" I own and keep it that way.

  1. One-Year Purge: If it hasn't been used in a year, get rid of it. No exceptions.
  2. Paper Zero: You should not have any paper (receipts, bills, etc), create digital scans if needed (e.g. taxes). This includes books, switch over to an ebook.
  3. Buy On-Demand: Don't store any consumable that lasts longer than a month, instead buy it on-demand (includes food and dry goods); Amazon is your best friend here (e.g. store toilet paper, buy deodorant on-demand)
  4. Just Enough Clothing: You have too many clothes if you can go longer than two weeks without washing
  5. Kitchens Cabinets should be Simple: No specialized kitchen gadgets and no more than 8 sets of tableware & flatware
  6. Occasional Purchases: One-off purchases should be donated, ideally rented (Halloween costumes, party goods)
  7. Redundancy should have a Purpose: A duplicate in one category should be intentional (e.g. an Apple Watch for every day and a mechanical watch for special events)
  8. One In, One Out: For every new item that comes into your possession, get rid of one old item
